Gamification in HRM: the power of the game

What is gamification and how does it help

Gamification is adding game mechanics into non-game environments. Lots of studies have proven the use of gamification in HRM can increase employee motivation, engagement, and performance and improve talent management.

Gamification has offered new opportunities to become more interactive in the recruitment process. People love games, and are more productive and engaged while playing games. The concept of gamification and HRM are a good combination as it creates a fun and agreeable environment which encourages the employee's willingness to solve problems.

Recruitment and assessment

Larger companies, such as tech giants like Google and Facebook are already adopting gamification in their recruitment processes, and recruiting experts consider it as a game-changer in recruiting.

One of the most crucial functions of HR for the company's success is the recruitment and selection of competent talent. Many companies find that gamification is an effective way to attract and assess candidates in the recruitment process.

Gamification can help identify the soft skills of employees and therefore reduce the chance and costs of bad hires. For Example, PwC Hungary launched a game called Multipoly for recruiting a pool of job candidates. The game allows candidates to solve real business problems thus testing whether they are the right people the company is looking for. Gamification in assessments allows organisations to test candidates’ soft and technical skills as well as behavioural traits via interactively engaging scenarios related to particular job roles.

Training

Making the workplace more fun is important, and it can improve training outcomes. We’re more willing to learn when we’re having fun and feeling engaged, and gamifying training is a great way to do that. Gamification can replace a boring training process with entertaining training that is enjoyable and entertaining to employees.

Gamification helps to increase commitment and retention within the learning environment by raising the immersed feeling, which motivates employees to obtain and apply new knowledge and promising an opportunity to change behaviour concerning organisational strategies and goals.

Engagement and performance

We are so addicted to games! When playing games, we are so engaged and motivated to keep playing. But how can we bring these attitudes to work?

Researchers find empirical evidence that gamification can enhance employee engagement, motivation, and job satisfaction. Games create an emotional engagement for the employee when the game design and working life are perfectly combined. Employees are motivated by external (money, appreciation, reward, and promotion) and internal motivations (self-development, gaining status, learning). Employees gaining points, badges, and leaderboards as internal motivation can increase the level of engagement, thus, performance.
