Purpose and Scope of the Job
The purpose of (GMH) is to support Greenpeace’s global programme by providing unique, credible, up-to-date information about our planet to empower public campaigns with innovative tools that will change power dynamics and build /support Greenpeace’s image as a data-based, expertise-based organization.

We are taking steps to integrate the mapping function into GP’s global programme priorities. This will happen among other things through a further collaboration and integration of the GMH’s staffing and through a redefinition of the connection between the GMH and the GPI programme team in terms of content alignment and prioritization. We want to broaden GMH beyond Greenpeace Russia and employ staff with capacity of 0.5 to 0.75 in another GP NRO.

The post holder is responsible for creating innovative and high-technical digital mapping products in-house for strengthening our program and engagement with web coding skills.

This post holder will be based in one of the regional offices in GPEA jurisdiction, integrating with existing mapping related capacity and team. The post holder’s responsibilities will cover for both GMH (up to 0.75) and GPEA’s projects, i.e. be co-managed by GMH and GPEA in terms of task and line management.
Responsibilities
Conceptual tasks, Strategy development and/or Project management
- Suggest GIS/Web solutions in project planning process.
Implementation
- Create web pages of maps/geographical illustration for programme and engagement in particular (references - 1, 2, 3)
- Scripting and application of programming codes and digital development techniques.
- Compile replicable projects and templating/automation to be further employed by many global projects.
- (Second priority) Connect GP projects and GIS freelancer/volunteer and communicate with external experts if needed.
Support/ Coaching/ Leadership
- Taking care of the mapping part in GP projects as a whole where needed.
- Connect GMH and Global program project teams on a regional basis.
- Keep eyes on knowing not only GIS aspects but also regional specifications, can be part of project teams for a particular region, consult, share skills and help to grow local capacity.

Skills and Expertise required
Education
- Academic education degree in a technical field such as computer science, computer engineering or related field required.
- GIS&RS training and education background is highly welcomed.
Experience
- Not less then 1-3 years of mapping web developer experience required (in international organisation - as an advantage)
- Hands-on experience in designing, developing and successful deployment of different-scale projects from end-to-end.
Specific skills
- Fluent English for communication in international team
- Proven working experience in web programming with JS/HTML/CSS, PHP coding capabilities.
- Adequate knowledge of relational database systems (SQL), Object Oriented Programming and web application development
- Experience with web map libraries: Leaflet, OpenLayers, Mapbox / Maplibre
- Spatial data formats operations - shp, geojson, kml, geotiff etc
- Some GIS/RS expertise is advantage
- Basic knowledge in graphic packages and viewers (Photoshop etc)
Specific Work Environment
- The position works in a standard office environment, travelling to other Greenpeace offices, campaign locations or locations where environmental problems require the presence of Greenpeace representatives.
- The position may be required to work under pressure and in physically or mentally challenging situations.
- Be on call after hours and on weekends as requested and is required to work remotely with time zone differences
