Role Introduction

Reports to: Group Head of Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility

This position is accountable for the development and implementation of Cathay Pacific Group’s climate change strategy by developing the next-level strategy under each major pillar and guide its execution. This includes strategising the reduction of Cathay’s carbon footprint to meet the company’s target of ‘net zero carbon emissions by 2050’, scaling up the use of sustainable aviation fuel, carbon offset strategy, new technology development related to decarbonising aviation, and mitigating climate change impact on Cathay’s business, as well as capturing opportunities brought about by climate change.
Responsibilities
- Climate Actions Governance: support Executive Sponsor on Climate Actions Steering Group meetings (3 times a year), co-chair SAF Taskforce with Procurement Team
- Disclosure and compliance: oversees the team to fulfill all climate change related disclosure and compliance requirements, including related audits: preparation of annual sustainable development report (climate change related content and data), submission of annual filing to CORSIA, EU ETS, UK ETS, CDP, and TCFD requirements.
- Supervise the team in development and updating of carbon emissions model and reduction roadmap, to establish interrim targets and provide financial implication assessment.
- Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF): continuous development and execution of SAF strategy, formulation of SAF coalition, identify opportunities for additional SAF supply and investment, manage existing and potential SAF suppliers, collaborate with partners on joint SAF procurement, monitoring SAF market and support development of favourable SAF policy
- Carbon offset: develop carbon offset strategy and implementation plan, both in meeting mandatory requirements (CORSIA) and Cathay Pacific’s voluntary programme Fly Greener. Develop our position and response to CORSIA and other applicable mandatory carbon offset schemes, strategic development and execution for sourcing carbon credits
- Participate in industry forums to keep abrest of regulation development, and to help shape future industry standards and ensure Cathay is positioned to react. (including International Civil Aviation Organisation ICAO, International Air Transport Association IATA, Association of Asia Pacific Airlines AAPA)
- Support other initiatives in developing climate resilience and capturing opportunities brought about by climate change in the Group: internal carbon pricing, TCFD implementation, climate risk and opportunity registry, climate action steering group, climate change related customer proposition development
Requirements
- A minimum of 10 year of relevant experience in aviation, climate change, sustainable development, or environmental affairs
- At least 5 years should be at managerial or leadership capacity to manage direct reports.
- University graduate in related discipline of environmental science, environmental management, or sustainability.
- Ability to engage at the C-Suite level. A strategic thinker and good planner, with deep understanding of climate change, change management, and cross-sectoral partnership.
- A team player; great people skills; including the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders, and to facilitate and lead cross-functional initiatives. Strong commercial acumen.
- Knowledge of climate science, climate related regulatory requirements, sustainable aviation fuel, carbon trading and offset, and/or the aviation industry would be of advantage.
- Must be fluent in spoken and written English. Knowing Chinese & Mandarin is highly desirable.
